Coffee tables come in thousands of different shapes and sizes, as do living areas. When making your purchase you need to find the size and shape that will best match your room whilst still looking and functioning how you require. Some people consider the look of a coffee table their number one priority and may prefer a very large coffee table for maximum visual impact. Others prefer to maximize the amount of floor space available for other uses.As a general guideline it is preferable to have a minimum of two feet around each side of the coffee table and it should be reachable, without standing, from each of the seating areas. Some people also suggest that your coffee table should be no larger than sixty percent of your sofas length. The height that you choose very much depends on what you intend to use it for. Modern coffee tables are often very low; however this may make using it for eating difficult. It is often a good idea to place an item of a similar size and shape to any table that you intend to buy in the room. This will give you a feel for how it will work with the space that you have.
You can find distinct coffee tables in sets or as individual pieces. They should always match and compliment your other home furnishings. All the decor in your home should follow a single style. This keeps a solid flow throughout your home. If you are going for a more traditional style in your home décor, unique coffee tables made of rich, dark wood are what you want to consider. If you want a more trendy, contemporary style for your home then you would want coffee tables made of different metals or glass.
Style & Colour: There are many styles available from very modern, to traditional styles, look for something that complements the room and other furnishings, and a classic glass top will generally be quite safe for those who are unsure. In terms of material, timber works well if you have small timber elements in the rooms, it helps to tie the room together. If you have a large amount of timber already though it can become overwhelmingly ’matchy-matchy’ easily if you select a matching coffee table, break it up with glass with timber legs, or a complimentary timber accessory on top of a poly or glass table. The modern polyurethane options are often suited to buying all one colour; they then form the background for the accessories such as the rug, flowers or prints in the room. If you want to create a beautiful arty display on top look for a simpler style that won’t compete, if you are not so confident with creating bold displays, select more of a statement piece that can become the talking point, a bolder design will ensure your guests don’t think you’re boring!
However, you can also go vice versa, especially if you have already arranged a room. Changing an old coffee table, can give your room a whole new lease of life. Add a splash of colour, an ingenious modern table and you get a whole new look. You have a marine or Hawaiian-style room, dominated by blue and green water? There are even tables in the form of fish aquariums so you can make it even more real.
