The purpose of a coffee table seems rather straight forward, at its most basic level it is a table in the centre of your living room on which you can put your coffee, magazines, and remotes, it may also moonlight as a dining table, a desk, a children’s everything table and a footrest, or at times double up as extra seating or a place to sort your washing. This relatively straightforward piece of furniture however has the potential to define your character, or at least the objects on it do, so what does your coffee table say about you?
Some small rooms require a table that can be functional. If this is the case, the table needs to be big enough to hold snacks, lamps, etc. The size of the family also needs to be considered and sometimes a couple of coffee tables will be necessary to meet the needs of a large group of people. Rectangular and square tables can be the answer to this decorating challenge. Round tables can also work but they can offer less surface area.
The size of your singular coffee tables is also a very important consideration. If you have larger scale furniture you want your coffee tables to be larger in scale also. A room can look odd and unbalanced if the coffee table is disproportionately larger or smaller than your other furniture.
