Many people with small children prefer a round coffee table as they consider the lack of sharp corners a safer option and less likely to cause accidents. Round tables can be difficult to fit into smaller rooms and can take up more floor space than other shapes. They can be very social however and are a good choice if you regularly sit around playing cards or board games.
Provocative but Functional. Coffee tables can be a fusion of the living and the abstract - a combination of aquarium and modern art. An ottoman combining storage, coffee pot and fish - though not fish for eating but for discussion. It is a living item of furniture that is both beautiful and thought provoking. A provocative item of furniture is sure to keep the conversation flowing over coffee. To put it in simpler terms, it should be a piece of furniture that people notice and comment upon, but that can also be used for setting down snacks, coffee cups and drinks glass. That, after all, is its primary raison d’être. Above all else, this type of table must be functional and the fish should not get in the way of the cups, nor should the books leave no room for the plates.
The coffee table generally sits in the expanse between the sofa/s and the television, and whilst it does offer a handy place to pop your glass of wine, its central location means that most eyes fall on it when they look at the room, and it becomes the most important focal point. So, are you the arty type with heavy art books and sketch books stacked sky high, or perhaps a slightly uptight neat freak, with a spotless surface and a coaster at the ready? Regardless of what your personality really is, or who you want to project, spending some time considering the ’presentation’ of your coffee table, just as you would a display on a buffet or dresser could make a huge difference to your room. If you want to create a coffee table display, select pieces with a similar theme and group them together, then balance the display with an off centre vase of flowers, or bowl. If you prefer to keep your coffee table surface clear, look for a coffee table design that makes more of a statement, to add interest to the centre of the room, if you have a minimalist theme, create depth by contrasting shapes, a simple round vase on a square table for example.
